Comet Borrelly
SPECIAL REPORT: Aged and Wounded Spacecraft Photographs Comet
SPACE.com will provide full coverage of findings expected in coming weeks
and months from Deep Space 1's flyby of comet Borrelly Sept. 22.
Borrelly: This Comet's A Star
"It's mind-boggling and stupendous," said Laurence Soderblom, leader
of Deep Space 1's imaging team.
Strange interactions
One of the most puzzling early results of the Deep Space 1 observations is
the curious way comet Borrelly interacts with space. As the comet nears the Sun,
it is pummeled by charged particles that travel outward from the Sun. Two
previous observations of this interaction in other comets showed that the solar
wind flowed around the comets in a fairly symmetric fashion, much like water
would flow around a smooth round rock.
But with Borrelly, that flow is bunched up on one side, researchers found.
"The center of this flow is not where the nucleus is, which according to
conventional wisdom it should be," said David Young of the University of
Michigan, leader of the team that made the measurements.
Something strange is going on, but only more research will explain what
it is.
Young speculated that newly found jets of gas and dust, seen emanating from the
comet in the new images, may have something to do with the phenomenon.
"The formation of the coma is not the simple process we once thought it was,"
Young said.

Stunning Comet Close-Ups Released From Fly-By
September 25, 2001
All over, the surface of the oblong object, roughly the size of Mt.
Everest, is revealed as rolling, pitted terrain marked by grand mesas. No
one involved in comet science or the mission that yielded the images expected
such variety on the surface of a frozen hunk of ice.
The observations, along with other measurements of Borrelly made by other
telescopes in recent days, are expected to paint an entirely new picture of the
frozen wanderers of the solar system, several comet experts said.
Keys to the past

the nucleus and infrared images that will provide a better view of the comet's
composition.

"I guarantee you they will blow your mind," Soderblom said.
Please consider the following quotes concerning comet Borrelly and perform your
own search at the NASA, JPL and Space.com sites. You will find that
significant amounts of information on comet Borrelly is being withheld from the
public. Following the initial reports that were released as data was being
received there has been only one additional article published at
Space.com in six months. That article released in November elaborated on
one peculiar aspect of Borrelly, its albedo. Apparently the Comet reflects so little
light that scientists can't explain how something can be so dark. Sound
familiar? Read below about the similarity between this object and the
Monolith in the film 2001 A Space Odyssey. Considering that one of the
proposed strategies for deflecting an asteroid is to 'paint'
it what questions do you think these astronomers/astrophysicists are asking
themselves about the implications of Borrelly's low albedo? When
calculating the orbits of asteroids and comets what effect does this low albedo
have not to mention unexpected jets of material shooting out in the
opposite direction? The November article claims
this 'trickle' of information will turn into a flood. We're waiting....

Comet Borrelly Puzzle: Darkest Object in the Solar System
29 November 2001
"We have known for years that the surface of the earth’s Moon is dark --
about as reflective as an asphalt parking lot," said Robert Nelson, a project
scientist on the Deep Space 1 mission at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. "The
nucleus of Borrelly is about half as reflective as the Moon."
"I'm not sure how you get an albedo that low," said Donald Yeomans, an expert on
comets and asteroids at JPL. "It must have to do with texture -- it can't all be
color."
"Nelson presented the findings today at a meeting of the American Astronomical
Society's Division for Planetary Sciences in New Orleans. They are part of a
trickle of discoveries that promises to soon turn into a flood as Borrelly
becomes the most highly scrutinized comet ever."
Well after more than seven months, on April 4, 2002 a team
of researchers released a paper which is
available on-line if you want to pay $5.00. I've not read it but I
have read a two page summary of the findings which can be found
here but is in Adobe Acrobat format. In my opinion I don't see
anything new or revealing that would justify Laurence Soderblom's earlier
exclamations. The summary merely contains more specific measurement
details such as angular and slope values. The most significant value in
the summary in my opinion is the albedo, "The entire nucleus is extremely
dark with geometric albedos in the range of 0.01 to 0.03; the average Bond
albedo is ~0.006."

Asteroid or Comet Predictions
Following my accurate prediction of a
catastrophic event on New York I
researched other prophecies that relate to the end of the world or global
upheavals. These coincidental events are based on
a complicated hypothesis that
involves the Bible, mythology, psychology, astronomy and a level of technology
that most everyone today would consider impossible. Obviously the
reference to Mars could be an allusion to the Roman war god and the global war on
terror.

(Nostradamus - Century X, Quatrain 72)

The year 1999, seventh month,
From the sky will come a great King of Terror:
To bring back to life the great King of the Mongols,
Before and after Mars to reign by good luck.
Interestingly Sept is French for seven but in this
example I suppose it could stand either for the seventh month or 'Sept'ember.
September was once the name for the seventh month, oct=8, nov=9, dec=10.
According to this page England celebrated the beginning of
the year on March 25th until the year 1752 and the adoption of the Gregorian
calendar. )

Indeed, let's take a closer look. Why for instance if the current
western calendar is based on the birth of Jesus, New Years is not December 25th?
Star of Bethlehem: Going Back in Time to Examine Its Origins
By Joe Rao, Special to SPACE.com, Fri Dec 20,2002
It seems almost traditional at this time of year for stargazers to ponder the
age-old question of the possible origin of the Star of Bethlehem. Was the
so-called Christmas Star an unusual, eye-catching gathering of naked-eye
planets, or was that fabled "sign in the sky" a meteor, comet, nova, or indeed
something supernatural?
…And it is very doubtful that Jesus was born in late December. For one thing,
the Biblical passage in St. Luke, "And there were in the same country shepherds
abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night," indicates that
spring is the likely season; that was when the shepherds in Judea were tending
the newborn lambs.
In ancient times, Dec. 25 was the date of the lavish Roman festival of
Saturnalia. It was a time when gifts were exchanged; homes, streets and
buildings were decorated; people came home for the holidays and everybody was in
a happy, party mood. It has been said that early Christians chose the date of
the Saturnalia in order to avoid attention and thus escape persecution.
When the Roman emperor Constantine officially adopted Christianity in the 4th
century, the date of Christmas remained Dec. 25.
Calendar Systems
Calendar systems are based around major historical events and calendars have
continually being altered and corrected and sometimes completely redefined. The
calendar base that we use today was not conceived until the year 525 AD. At that
time the Roman Calendar was still being used which was based on the founding of
the city of Rome on April 22, 753 BC.
Changes have happened since Pope Gregory XIII adjusted the calendar in 1582 AD,
who eliminated the accumulated error caused by a faulty calculation of the
length of a year and avoided its recurrence by restricting century leap years to
those divisible by 400. (Yes, 2000 is a leap year). This was introduced in Roman
Catholic countries and other states only gradually changed from Old Style to New
Style; Britain and its colonies didn't adopt the Gregorian calendar for almost
two centuries in 1752 AD, when the error amounted to 11 days. The 3 September
1752 AD became 14 September 1752 AD. Up until then England had celebrated
beginning of the year on 25 March; after 1752 it was moved to 1 January.
Saturnalia
Saturnalia was probably the most popular Roman festival. Saturnalia was held
in mid-December to honor the god Saturn with feasting, gift giving and role
reversal.
Saturnalia
In Ancient Rome, the mythical age of Saturn's kingship was a golden age of
happiness for all men, without theft or servitude, and without private property.
Saturn, dethroned by his son Jupiter, had joined Janus as ruler in Italy, but
when his time as earthly king was up, he disappeared. “It is said that to this
day He lies in a magic sleep on a secret island near Britain, and at some future
time ... He will return to inaugurate another Golden Age.”
Saturn Viewer's Guide: Ringed Beauty as Bright as it Gets
By Joe Rao, Special to SPACE.com, 13 December 2002
Saturn is now brighter than at anytime in the past three decades and makes a
fine and simple skywatching target in the evening sky.
Saturn is shining as bright as it can ever get, mimicking a beautiful
golden-yellow "star" within the horns of the constellation of Taurus, the Bull.
There are two reasons why Saturn appears so exceptionally bright this winter
season:
First, the planet is now about as close to the Earth as it can ever come. Saturn
will reach the perihelion point of its orbit (nearest to the Sun) on July 26,
2003. This circumstance will also bring Saturn near to its closest possible
approach to Earth during successive December oppositions in 2002 and 2003. On
Dec. 17 of this year Saturn’s distance from Earth will be 748, 474,580 miles
away.
I can think of three different ways that the year 2001 is instead
1999.
- The Catholic Church in the 18th century when creating our Gregorian
calendar secretly removed dates for the actual years of 666 and 1666. (Yes you
will find references to those years if you look.)
- Since the calendar is based on the birth of Jesus Christ I've read no one
is really sure exactly when he was born. It should be possible to
compare to astronomical records (from non-Catholics) if they exist because of the bright star
that was seen at his birth.
- Because of my contention that our solar system exists in a curvature of
space-time, time is not consistent. Because we are accelerating down the
distortion, time is accelerating (shorter space and faster speed). If
someone were able to perform temporal calculations for say the past 2000 or
250 years there may be a difference of two years. (This is also one of
the ways to explain the long lifespan of people in the old testament. Another
other is advanced medical technology.)

And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it

thrown down, and shall be found no more at all. |
mill-stone (mil'stohn ) n.
1. either of a pair of circular stones between which grain or
another substance is ground, as in a mill.
This is an interesting application that shows the
relative positions of objects in our solar system. Notice that if you
change the date to December 25th the Earth is in the same relative position as
the comet was on today Oct. 21. It appears as if the comet may be changing
position just enough so that the Earth hits it.

Here are some interesting and possibly relevant
associations to the Mars reference in the Century X, Quatrain 72. (For more on

Mars to Get Closer than Ever in Recorded History in 2003
Fri Nov 8, 2002, 8:50 AM ET
Mars recently emerged into the morning sky and has begun an orbital
dance with Earth that will, over the next several months, lead to the best
viewing opportunity since Neanderthals looked skyward.
At 5:51 a.m. EDT on Aug. 27, 2003, Mars will be within 34,646,488 miles
(55,746,199 kilometers) of Earth. This will be the closest that Mars has come to
our planet in about 73,000 years, based on detailed computations by Jean Meeus
of Belgium.
At the close approach, the Red Planet will be brighter
than Jupiter and all the stars in the night sky, outshone only by Venus and the
Moon.
Mars
Ancient Roman god of war and protector of Rome, second only to Jupiter in
importance. His festivals occurred in the spring (March) and fall (October).
Until the time of Augustus, Mars had only two temples in Rome. His sacred spears
were kept in a sanctuary; on the outbreak of war, the consul had to shake the
spears, saying "Mars vigila!" ("Mars, awake!")

WAR BEGINS: U.S. attacks 'target of opportunity'
Associated Press Writer, Thursday, March 20, 2003
BAGHDAD, Iraq -- Anti-aircraft tracers flashed across the skies of Baghdad and
explosions sounded in the city at dawn Thursday as President Bush launched war
against Saddam Hussein.
"We cry for Baghdad," said civil servant and part-time Baghdad historian
Abdel-Jabar al-Tamimi. "Tonight, we shall be awake waiting for the bombs
to fall, but we will also remember that God is stronger than oppression. Wars
come and go, but Baghdad will remain."
Here is bit more interesting comet research. It
includes some dramatic images of a comet's [NEAT] close encounter with our Sun,
a CME which appears to possibly effect the comet's trajectory and NASA's
declaration that the comet does NOT pose a threat to Earth. Some have
equated this comet incident with Nostradamus' Century 2, Quatrain 46. If
this or any other comet or asteroid were found to be on an impact trajectory
with Earth would you want to be told or would you want your Government to lie to
you?

Promising New Comet Called NEAT Graces Evening Sky
31 January 2003
Comet NEAT has already shown itself to be an oddball, so before projecting what
NEAT might do, a little history is in order.
The I.A.U. Circular No. 8010, dated Nov. 6, 2002, stated that Steven H. Provdo
of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory reported the discovery of a new comet as
part of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory's NEAT program. NEAT is an autonomous
celestial observatory searching for and studying asteroids and comets that roam
the same region of the solar system through which Earth orbits.
Misleading so far
Another well-known comet expert, John Bortle of Stormville, New York, has
also been carefully following comet NEAT.
"This object has already proven a bit of an oddball," Bortle says, adding, "its
appearance and apparent development have misled many folks so far."
The first predictions indicated that the comet would dutifully brighten as it
approached the Sun, possibly reaching second magnitude (the brightness of
Polaris, the North Star) at perihelion. At that time however, the comet would be
positioned just six degrees from the Sun in our sky and would be hopelessly
drowned-out by the brilliant solar glare.
But during December, a curious thing began to happen.
Amazing Live Images: Sungrazing Comet Possibly Hit by Solar Eruption
By Robert Roy Britt, Senior Science Writer, 18 February 2003
The SOHO spacecraft is currently generating spectacular images of a recently
found comet called NEAT as the icy body circles the Sun and appears to have been
struck by a massive solar eruption. The chance encounter could lead to new
discoveries about the interactions of comets with hot, charged particles
billowing from the Sun.
NEAT is putting on what may turn out to be the most remarkable comet show ever
witnessed by SOHO, which has photographed more than 500 comets rounding the Sun.

"It is far the brightest and largest comet seen," Paal Brekke,
SOHO deputy project scientist, told SPACE.com
The comet, officially C/2002 V1, should be visible in SOHO's LASCO-3 camera
through the pre-dawn hours Thursday.
A solar eruption, called a coronal mass ejection (CME), appears to have hit the
comet Monday, Brekke said. Scientists think they observed a kink propagating
down the comet's ion tail.
Alleged NASA Cover-up of Menacing 'NEAT' Comet Threat is Pure Bunk, Experts Say
28 February 2003, Space.com
Internet accounts of a comet, supposedly bigger than Jupiter and possibly
bearing down on Earth, have concerned citizens e-mailing astronomers and
journalists worldwide asking if the end is finally nigh. True to form, the
rumors also include allegations of a cover-up by NASA.
Scientists say there is absolutely no danger and
call the suggestions of cover-up false and even silly.
The inaccurate portrayals on various Internet sites range from suggestions that
the comet's electromagnetic field will drastically alter Earth's weather in
coming days to even wilder notions that it is not a comet but instead the
long-missing and hypothetical "Planet X." In some accounts the object is
destined to fulfill dire Biblical prophecy.
The rumors are all based on a comet called NEAT, discovered late last year and
imaged in mid-February by the SOHO spacecraft, which is operated jointly by NASA
and the European Space Agency.
Asteroids and Secrecy: If End is Nigh, Do You Want to Know?
By Robert Roy Britt, 24 February 2003
Suppose a giant asteroid is heading toward Earth right
now. Impact is certain. The consequences are expected to be globally
devastating, with the human race among the casualties. The chances of doing
anything about it are zero, the government decides.
Would you want to know?
According to some articles, the U.S. Government has been advised to withhold
information of a catastrophic impact, were one ever found to be imminent. The
Times of London put this headline above its story: "Don't Tell Public of
Doomsday Asteroid."

Atlantis
As I believe the primary goal here may be to scare people
and not kill them I'm theorizing that the comet (or another) will impact the Atlantic ocean
sometime in the future.
The massive sea waves that result will threaten to wipe out the east coast of
the United States as well as other Atlantic coastal countries such as England.
However I'm guessing, again from films and the bible that the sea waves will
suddenly stop just before impact. Such an event occurred in the director's
cut of the film 'The Abyss'. In the film one character attempts to explain
the extraterrestrial's control of a water 'tentacle' by suggesting they have the
ability to 'polymerize' water. I wonder how many people saw this as a
possible explanation for biblical miracles such as Moses parting the Red Sea and
Jesus walking on water? How about the sinking of the mythical city
of Atlantis? The second article sites research, backed by physical
evidence that supports the theory that Atlantis and its culture were destroyed by
multiple asteroid impacts around 1200 BCE. It’s like putting the pieces of
a jigsaw puzzle together once you’ve decided that forcing the pieces together
that don’t match isn’t the right way. The evidence should be followed and not
the opinions of established academics.
Update on Underwater Megalithic Structures near Western Cuba
Copyright © 2001 Linda Moulton Howe, November 19, 2001
November 19, 2001 Havana, Cuba - The story about a possible megalithic site half
a mile down off the western tip of Cuba first broke this past May when a Reuters
News Service reporter interviewed the deep ocean engineer who first reported
unusual sidescan sonar of the discovery. Her name is Paulina Zelitsky.
...
This week I talked with both Paulina Zelitsky and Paul Weinzweig and
learned that in addition to the sonar images, this late summer they were able to
get some light and a videotape camera down to the underwater site in a Remote
Operated Vehicle known as an ROV. Over the past several months, I have had an
agreement with Mr. Weinzweig in which I can discuss their progress with the
site, but will only report publicly when I have permission.
"IS THERE ANYTHING THAT YOU CAN SAY ON THE RECORD THIS
MORNING THAT I CAN DO SOME KIND OF AN UPDATE?
For the record you can say that the Center for Marine Archaeology and
Anthropology at the Cuban Academy of Sciences is currently analyzing video data
which we have from the perimeter of the site from megalithic stones. They are
working on inscriptions that they have detected on these stones and they are
analyzing them at this time.
AND YOU MENTIONED POSSIBLY THE SAME KIND OF LOOK AS THE
PERIMETER STONES AT STONEHENGE? THAT KIND OF RECTANGULAR LOOKING?
Yes, the same kind of stone that you see on Easter Island and in Stonehenge.
Very large and smooth and light colored that bear no relationship to the
surrounding ecology. And also there is evidence of smooth cut and fit, that is
one on top of another, as if the basis of a pyramid or large building.
...
There was a huge gap in knowledge between Plato's and Solon's time and what
happened in Atlantis. Because we now know that when the Bronze Age stopped
suddenly around 1200 B. C., that for the next 400 years at least there was a
period of profound Dark Age. There was no more writing. There was no more
building of cities. The population of the world had decreased phenomenally.
There was widespread burning. The entire Black Forest of Germany was
incinerated. Every, not virtually, but every known archaeological site in the
Near East and Asia Minor were burned. It is now understood that there was a
major catastrophe of which Atlantis was only a small part that whipped around
the world in a band literally from about Iceland to oh, say, the middle of North
Africa. It affected North America, went right through the Pacific.
There was a symposium of archaeo-astronomers back in 1997, not New Age people at
all, in England, in which they found that probably the greatest natural
catastrophe human beings ever witnessed was around 1200 B. C. And that was when
two or more comets, including
Haley's Comet, converged in the skies over
earth and showered the world with a barrage of asteroids and meteors that pushed
human beings to the brink of extinction.
And Atlantis was especially hard hit because there are two Swedish
physicists, Thomas Larsson and Lars Franzen, who established in 1997 that
several asteroids - I'm not talking about
meteorites - several asteroids! collided in the
eastern Atlantic precisely in the location of Atlantis and that is why we can
explain why an island the size of Atlantis which was 6,000 square miles - it was
not a continent, it was a big island. And it was destroyed. If you have an
island out in the middle of the water and it's hit by several nuclear blasts at
once, the chances of that thing being around are slim.
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE ACADEMIC WORLD THEN?
"It is stood on its ear because the academic world has been demanding for
the last 100 years that anybody who believed in Atlantis believes in fantasy,
they don't know what they are talking about, they are very unscientific. And
beyond that, they say civilization just began 5,000 years ago very slowly in
Mesopotamia between the Tigris and Euphrates. Well, all of that is going to have
to be thrown out! We are going to be looking at something completely different
now. In other words, all of the textbooks, our entire concept of where we came
from is going to have to be changed."

Images of Massive Stones 2,000 Feet Below Surface Fuel Scientific Speculation
By Kevin Sullivan
Washington Post Foreign Service
Thursday, October 10, 2002; Page A25
HAVANA -- The images appear slowly on the
video screen, like ghosts from the ocean floor. The videotape, made by an
unmanned submarine, shows massive stones in oddly symmetrical square and pyramid
shapes in the deep-sea darkness.
Sonar images taken from a research ship 2,000 feet above are even more puzzling.
They show that the smooth, white stones are laid out in a geometric pattern. The
images look like fragments of a city, in a place where nothing man-made should
exist, spanning nearly eight square miles of a deep-ocean plain off Cuba's
western tip.
Earl has visited Cuba and described the preliminary evidence as "fantastic" and
"extraordinary." But she stressed that as a "skeptical scientist," she would
assume that the unusual stones were formed naturally until scientific evidence
proved otherwise.
"There is so much speculation about ancient civilizations," she said. "I'm in
tune with the reality and the science, not the myths or stories or fantasies."
Probe Into Cuba's Possible 'Sunken City' Advances
March 29, 2002 06:16 PM ET, By Andrew Cawthorne
HAVANA (Reuters) - Scientific investigators said on Friday they hope to better
determine later this year if an unusual rock formation deep off Cuba's coast
could be a sunken city from a previously unknown ancient civilization.
"These are extremely peculiar structures ... They have captured all our
imagination," Cuban geologist Manuel Iturralde said at a conference after a week
on a boat over the site.
"If I had to explain this geologically, I would have a hard time," he told
reporters later, saying examination of rock samples due to be collected in a few
months should shed further light on the formation off the Guanahacabibes
Peninsula on Cuba's western tip.
Explorers to return to ocean floor in hopes of confirming shapes are sign of
lost civilization
Wed May 22, 2002 8:43 PM ET, By ANITA SNOW, Associated Press
Writer
HAVANA - Floating aboard the Spanish trawler she chartered
to explore the Cuban coast for shipwrecks, Paulina Zelitsky pores over yellowed
tomes filled with sketches and tales of lost cities — just like the one she
believes she has found deep off the coast of western Cuba.
"You would not think that a reasonable woman of my age
would fall for an idea like this," chuckled Zelitsky, a 57-year-old offshore
engineer who runs the exploration firm Advanced Digital Communications of
British Columbia, Canada.
Zelitsky passionately believes the megalithic structures her crew discovered
2,310 feet (693 meters) below the ocean's surface could prove that a
civilization lived thousands of years ago on an island or stretch of land
joining the archipelago of Cuba with Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, about 120 miles
(200 kilometers) away.
Evidence for Zelitzky's hypothesis is far from conclusive, and has been met with
skepticism from scientists from other countries who nevertheless decline to
comment publicly on the project until scientific findings have been made
available. Submerged urban ruins have never been found at so great a depth.
Zelitsky shies from using the term "Atlantis," but comparisons are inevitable to
the legendary sunken civilization that Plato described in his "Dialogues" around
360 B.C.

may be common in religion or in politics, but it is not the path to
knowledge, and there's no place for it in the endeavor of science. We do

solar system shows us clearly that accepted and conventional ideas are
often wrong, and that fundamental insights can arise from the most
unexpected sources.”

At the very least It’s fun to speculate on the coincidences between
the ‘unexplained’ low albedo of the comet Borrelly and the monolith in the film

the film ‘altered’ the primates and the theory of Panspermia shows how genetic
programming in viruses and bacterial spores can be delivered to planets by way of comets. For more

INTRODUCTION: MORE THAN
PANSPERMIA
“Cosmic Ancestry is a new theory of evolution and the origin of life on
Earth. It holds that life on Earth was seeded from space, and that life's
evolution to higher forms depends on genetic programs that come from space. It
is a wholly scientific, testable theory for which evidence is accumulating.”
COMETS: THE DELIVERY SYSTEM
“The objection that life can't survive in space needs examination. A serious
problem for Svante Arrhenius's theory in 1908 was that spores in empty space
would be subject to radiation damage, especially in the vicinity of a star. In
1978, Hoyle and Wickramasinghe observe in Lifecloud (1) that if a cloud of
bacterial matter were dense enough, the inner contents would be protected from
radiation by the outer layers. Other scientists have recently observed that a
coating of dust only half a micrometer thick would adequately protect a
bacterium in space (2-4).”
“Hoyle and Wickramasinghe also discuss another means of space travel which
solves the radiation problem: comets. The idea that comets could bring to Earth
the ingredients for life is not completely new. Among others, Isaac Newton
endorsed it. "Newton considered the continual arrival of cometary material to be
essential for life on Earth" (5).”
Surviving Space: How Bugs Might Travel Between Planets
By Stephen Hart, Astrobiology Magazine
26 November 2002
It came from outer space. Life, that is.
This concept has drifted around the universe of space science since at least as
long ago as 1864, when William Thomson Kelvin told the Royal Society of
Edinburgh "The hypothesis that life originated on this earth through moss-grown
fragments from the ruins of another world may seem wild and visionary; all I
maintain is that it is not unscientific." He repeated the assertion in 1871 at
the 41st Meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science,
using the less colorful term "seed-bearing meteoritic stones."
...
Horneck’s results lend more support to the modern variant of Lord Kelvin’s
moss-grown rock idea. When large objects impact a planet, there’s a sort of
splash zone in a ring abound the impact. Large chunks of planet may shoot into
space. Impacts this large were common late in the formation of the solar system.
But even as recently as about 65 million years ago a meteor hit Mexico, ejecting
so much material into the atmosphere that it’s suspected of causing the
extinction of the dinosaurs.
"This concept, called also litho-panspermia, is based on the scenario that by an
impact of a very large kilometer-sized meteor or comet, material is ejected from
a planet and can reach escape velocity," Horneck explains. "There are certain
areas at the rim of the impact crater, called the spallation zone, where by
reflection of the shock wave the temperatures do not exceed 100 degrees Celsius"
[212 degrees Fahrenheit, the boiling point of water].
That’s cool enough to allow spores to survive ejection, the first stage of
interplanetary travel. The second stage Horneck addressed in her research.
"There are some studies simulating the reentry process," Horneck says of the
last stage of an interplanetary trip. "It seems, that spores can also survive
this in the inner part of the meteorite. Entering the atmosphere goes very fast,
and so only the outer layer is heated."

Asteroid Recent Developments
Since December 2001 Earth has been visited by at least
half a dozen Near Earth Asteroids (NEA). According to one article at least
one one of these passed within less than one lunar distance. The frequency
of these events and the scientific communities increased awareness of the threat
and real inability to adequately track this threat much less do anything about
it has motivated the community recently to unite and plead to world governments
to increase funding for their detection and possible response. Regrettably
their concerns are falling on deaf ears as our 'noble' leaders are too occupied
with more mundane and 'practical' problems as well as the ludicrous war on
terrorism. (The articles are in listed in chronological order.)
Asteroid Discoveries May Outpace Ability to Assess Threat to
Earth
19 October 2001, By Robert Roy Britt, Senior Science Writer
"Any large asteroids bearing down on Earth would likely be discovered decades
in advance, experts say. But smaller objects often go undetected and could
destroy a city. And no one can say if or when a surprise impact might
occur."
Space rock hurtles past Earth
Monday, 7 January, 2002, 07:52 GMT, By BBC News
Online science editor Dr David Whitehouse
"Astronomers also add that it is "potentially hazardous", meaning there is a
slim chance that it may strike the Earth sometime in the future."
Large Asteroid Passes Close to Earth
Tuesday January 8 4:10 PM ET
"Asteroid 2001 YB5, estimated to be 1,000 feet across, was traveling about
68,000 mph relative to the Earth when it zipped past."
``It's a fairly substantial rock. If it had hit us at that sort of speed, you
would be taking out a medium-size country, France, I suppose, or Texas, or
something of that order,'' said Jay Tate, director of the Spaceguard Centre in
Wales."
World's Asteroid Hunters Make Political Plea to Save Earth
31 January 2002, By
Robert Roy Britt Senior Science Writer
"Prompted by a close brush between Earth
and an asteroid in early January, scores of top researchers who often don't see
eye-to-eye have made a joint political plea for help in saving the planet."
"The scientists also sometimes disagree over how their findings should be
presented, or not presented, to the public. Some have called for full
disclosure at times. Others have suggested a more guarded release of
information only after public risk, or lack of it, has been well established."
"One thing they all agree on, however, is that the threat is real."
Whew! Stealth asteroid nearly blindsides Earth
March 19, 2002 Posted: 5:41 PM EST (2241 GMT), By Richard Stenger CNN
"A sizable asteroid zipped near our planet this month without anyone noticing
because it traveled through an astronomical blind spot, scientists said."
"The space boulder passed Earth within 288,000 miles (461,000 kilometers) -- or
1.2 times the distance to the moon -- on March 8, but since it came from the
direction of the sun, scientists did not observe it until four days later."
"The object, slightly larger than one that flattened a vast expanse of Siberia
in 1908, was one of the 10 closest known asteroids to approach Earth,
astronomers said."
"Asteroid 2002 EM7 took us by surprise. It is yet another reminder of the
general impact hazard we face," said Benny Peiser, a European scientist who
monitors the threat of Earth-asteroid collisions."
Why We Fear Ourselves More than Asteroids
26 March 2002, By Robert Roy Britt, Senior Science Writer
In the past six months, while the world focused on the continuing
threat of global terrorism, as many as a dozen or more asteroids sneaked up on
the Earth and zoomed by at distances just beyond the Moon's orbit and closer.
Most were never noticed. Earlier this month, astronomers did spot one. Four days
after it flew by.
In discussing these events, experts describe a planet vulnerable to an
unexpected attack that could, in an instant, wipe out a city or even destroy
civilization. Some researchers go so far as to view the asteroid threat as an "international
emergency situation," as Andy Smith of the Safety Research Institute in
Albuquerque New Mexico said last week.
Yet as billions upon billions of dollars are spent to provide insurance against
terrorism, astronomers were foiled in a recent attempt to encourage Australia to
invest a comparatively paltry $1 million to scan the mostly unsurveyed southern
skies for killer space rocks.
The scientists were practically laughed at on television by the science minister
of Australia who, like much of the world's public, simply does not take the
threat of asteroids seriously.
Many astronomers, it must be noted, believe present asteroid search efforts are
fairly adequate, notwithstanding the lack of a southern telescope.
A more vocal group of astronomers and other proponents of increased spending
tend to worry about smaller asteroids that could cause regional devastation. And
they tend to make more frightening statements. Here are just a few that have
come from the mouths of respected experts just in the past 10 days:
"If it were over a populated area, like Atlanta, it would have basically
flattened it," asteroid cataloguer Gareth Williams told CNN in discussing the
potential of asteroid 2002 EM7.
"We live in a cosmic shooting gallery," said Duncan Steel of Salford University.
"We're talking about a million megaton explosion," said author and physicist
Paul Davies of Macquarie University, in discussing a typical impact on another
recent television program. "That's a million city-bursting bombs all going off
at once."
While such statements are often softened with the reminder that the world
probably won't end tonight -- Davies said in the next breath, "I don't want
people to lie awake at night worrying about it" -- the effort is clear: Get you
and the politicians to act on this threat.
A Homeland Defense for Planet Earth
03 April 2002, By Leonard David, Senior Space Writer
ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO -- Earth is on a "hit list" with hazardous
asteroids and comets being nature's own terrorism from the sky. More than
100,000 dangerous near-Earth objects exist - known in sky watching circles as
NEOs.
Off-the-shelf technology to prevent future impacts from making a mess of things
already exists, but some assembly is required. More worrisome is that little is
being done to prepare for the day when a big one smacks into our planet,
stirring up global consequences.
The threat from celestial wanderers is real. A homeland defense plan for planet
Earth is now needed. And time is running out.
Large Asteroid Narrowly Misses Earth
Thu Jun 20,10:14 PM ET
An asteroid the size of a soccer field narrowly missed the
Earth by 75,000 miles — less than a third of the distance to the moon and one of
the closest known approaches by objects of this size, scientists said Thursday.
"In the unlikely event the asteroid had struck Earth in a populated area,
it
would have caused considerable loss of life," said scientist Grant Stokes. "The
energy release would be of the magnitude of a large nuclear weapon."
Space
rock 'on collision course'
Wednesday, 24 July, 2002, 02:29 GMT 03:29 UK
An asteroid discovered just weeks ago has become the most threatening
object yet detected in space.
A preliminary orbit suggests that 2002 NT7 is on an impact course with Earth and
could strike the planet on 1 February, 2019 - although the uncertainties are
large.
U.S. Military Considers Coordinated Clearinghouse to Monitor and Respond to
Asteroid, Comet Threat
By Leonard David, 05 August 2002
The U.S. Space Command is reviewing a plan to create a clearinghouse that
gathers and analyzes data regarding impending Earth impacts from asteroids or
comets. The information node would also assess possible damage stemming from an
incoming object. Such a clearinghouse, if established, would merge military and
civilian talent to help minimize damage and loss of life due to a strike from
space.
Experts from the U.S. military, NASA, sky monitoring
groups, as well as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), took part in
the SAIC study. The $92,000 assessment began in earnest last October and was
delivered to the U.S. Space Command in June.
It's a "virtual certainty", Roberts said, that
Earth is going to be on the receiving end of an asteroid or comet. "It is time
to take the next step. We need to bring techniques, capabilities, information
and procedures together that have been heretofore separated and segmented," he
said.
"There is no question. It is a mathematical certainty. This is the one point in
time…the one natural disaster that we can influence. I believe our study takes
the right direction and is the right next step," Roberts concluded.
Scant Support for Turning Aside Doomsday Asteroid
Tue Sep 3, 5:13 PM ET
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A doomsday asteroid could wipe out humanity if it
collided with Earth, but scientists said on Tuesday there was little support for
investigating how to turn aside a big deadly space rock.
An asteroid, headed our way
By Peter N. Spotts | Staff writer of The
Christian Science Monitor
from the July 26, 2005 edition
Humans live in a vast solar system where 2,000 feet seems a razor-thin distance.
Yet it's just wide enough to trigger concerns that an asteroid due to buzz Earth
on April 13, 2029 may shift its orbit enough to return and strike the planet
seven years later.
The concern: Within the object's range of possible fly-by distances lie a
handful of gravitational "sweet spots," areas some 2,000 feet across that are
also known as keyholes.
The physics may sound complex, but the potential ramifications are plain enough.
If the asteroid passes through the most probable keyhole, its new orbit would
send it slamming into Earth in 2036. It's unclear to some experts whether
ground-based observatories alone will be able to provide enough accurate
information in time to mount a mission to divert the asteroid, if that becomes
necessary.
So NASA researchers have begun considering whether the US needs to tag the
asteroid, known as 99942 Apophis, with a radio beacon before 2013.
99942 Apophis
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit.
99942 Apophis (previously better known by its provisional
designation 2004 MN4) is a Near-Earth asteroid that caused a brief period of
concern in December 2004 because initial observations indicated a relatively
large probability that it would strike the Earth in 2029. However, additional
observations provided improved predictions that eliminated the possibility of an
impact on Earth or the Moon in 2029. A future impact on April 13, 2036, is
still possible, keeping the asteroid at level 1 on the Torino impact hazard
scale as of September 2005, with an estimated impact-probability of 1 in
5,560.
(For several recent articles regarding meteor/asteroid
sightings and impacts please go here.
They appear to be occurring with increasing frequency.)
